|Happy Travel and Tours Corporation opened its door for business in April 1, 1984. 1984 was a time of recovery after a tumultuous year when its President, Mr. Willy Tan, together with his wife and also the General Manager, Ms Mary Sia Tan conceptualized it as an independent entity that has expertise in travel, and airline and hotel operations. Armed only with their collective years of valuable experience in the tourism industry and the support of the family, they were able to establish a travel agency that will eventually become one of the major players of the tourism industry of the Philippines.
Happy Travel started as a small business with an office located at the 2nd Floor of Manila Midtown Arcade in Ermita, Manila. With only two officers and four personnel, the agency served as a retailer for hotel accommodations (i.e. the company book their hotels through other travel agencies) and ticketing agent for airline partners like Philippine Airlines and China Airlines. Barely two years had passed, the company had built up its credibility and the company started dealing with the different hotels directly. It had established a reputation for itself as a professional incentive travel operator and handler, efficiently servicing the very demanding tour and conference itineraries of foreign companies.
As an indication of its steady growth and expansion, the company moved to a bigger office a stone throw away from its former location in 1989. It is now located at R. Salas corner M. Adriatico St. Ermita, Manila. The staff has grown to eighteen trained young men and women dedicated to giving prompt and efficient service to the company's increasing clientele here and abroad. To keep it abreast with the current trends in the industry, it is a member of the different associations here in the Philippines, like:
- Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA)
- Philippine Tour Operators Association (PHILTOA)
- Philippine Convention and Visitors Corporation (PCVC)
These associations inform us of the latest developments and news regarding the tourism industry here in our country and the market abroad.
Since 1992, Happy Travel has been the local handling agent of Royal Brunei Airlines (RBA); i.e. tour packages offered by RBA are booked through our agency. Aside from this affiliation, the company has a special tie-up with our wholesale agents, Maynila Holidays Ltd. of Hong Kong and Luxury Tours of Singapore. It also provides the hotel accommodations and land arrangements for a number of reputable travel agents in countries like Malaysia, Japan, Brunei, Indonesia and Thailand.
Now, Happy Travel is considered as one of the top producers of most hotels here in Metro Manila as well as some hotels and resorts in the Visayas and Mindanao region. From being a retailer of hotel accommodations, it is now one of the biggest wholesaler for FIT (Foreign Individual Traveler) bookings. This is evident by the numerous awards received by the company since 1992. Among the first few hotels that cited the company as one of its valuable supporter, are Holiday Inn Manila, Manila Midtown Hotel and Century Park Hotel.
1998 was an eventful as well as a fruitful year for the company. For the first time in the travel industry, the Association of the Credit Executives of the Travel Industry (ACETI) gave recognition to some of its industry partners. This resulted to Happy Travel being the first recipient of the "Outstanding ACETI Travel Agency for the year 1997" award. Happy Travel was unanimously voted as the number one choice for the award. Another first for the company was being the first Hall of Fame awardee of the Manila Galleria Suites as well as Holiday Inn Manila. This award was given for consistently being the top producer of the hotel for five consecutive years.
The company marked a significant milestone last 1998. This occurred during the Junior Chamber International (JCI) World Congress that was held here in Manila last November 15-21. Happy Travel was appointed as the official travel agency to handle the room reservations of the biggest convention for 1998. In line with the 1998 World Congress theme "Bringing Worlds Together in Manila", this convention brought together 120 countries from all over the world, and converged around 3,500 delegates here in Manila.
The year 2000 is another momentous year for the company. Happy Travel moved again to its own building called Happy Tower located a block away from its present edifice at R. Salas corner Mabini St. Ermita, Manila.
